About Yoshimi Matsukata

Yoshimi S. Matsukata, raised in Japan, Australia, Hong Kong, and Greenwich, CT, brings an intercultural dynamism to her artwork. Fluent in both Japanese and English, she regards herself as the quintessential third culture kid. Her art education also spans multiple continents and includes training in both traditional Japanese calligraphy and Western painting. While earning a B.A. in biochemistry from Harvard, she studied art with Patrice M. Sullivan, William P. Reimann and Toshihiro Katayama at Harvard University’s Carpenter Center. Yoshimi has also studied locally at the Art League School with Gwen Bragg and Deborah Ellis, the Corcoran School of Art and the Washington Studio School. Yoshimi’s work is in private collections in the United States and overseas. She has exhibited at the Kato Gallery in Tokyo, the Arts Club of Washington, D.C., the Art League Gallery in Alexandria, VA and Strathmore Hall. She has received numerous awards in local watercolor shows. Her work has been juried into the Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Show in Golden, Colorado, one of the top watermedia shows in the country. She is a signature member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society and a member of the Potomac Valley Watercolorists. Yoshimi lives in Bethesda with her husband, Nao and her son, Shokuma.
